Ideas regarding genre and artist featured linked to audience (2)

The articles And DPS will be about how the artist started making music in his room to now making music in studios for certain record labels. The article will include pictures and interviews and a timeline on how he moved up in the music industry. The front cover will feature the artist as the main article and artist. Also the gender targeted will be male and the ages from 16-24.

Mrs D

You are now up to date. Make sure you organise your time to stay this way.

Your initial ideas are interesting. You need to think about the contents and what specifically will be in your DPS article.

Notes from what i have learnt from the RMA.

From the RMA i analysised i have learnt that a magazine normally has one specific target audience and genre, Rather than mixed genres. The colours and fonts used on front covers help represent the audience/artist that is being featured. For example, KERRANG tends to use blacks,reds,yellows. Mostly darker shades of colour but on the other hand NME, a more mainstream magazine, uses a lot more vibrant and bright colours. Overall, i have learnt;
- To keep intone with the genre (i.e. using the right colours and fonts).
- Specific designs are used to represent the genre and artists.
- Use pull qoutes and article information on the front cover to give the auidence a better idea of what is in the Magazine.
- The magazines normally target one certain age group and genre.
- Titles on the front cover of the Magazines can change colour but the font always stays the same.
- Colours on the cover are always different, depends on the artist or style of the issue.
- Contents pages set up in columns on either the left side or right side, with a main picture in the middle (the picture isnt always the featuring artist from the front cover).
-Double page spreads are always designed in a way that goes with artist and title of the cover.

ideas on genre

The genre i have chosen is Electronic/dubstep/dance/EDM/Drum and bass (they are fall into the same category). The reason i have selected this genre is because in the past 5 years this muisc has grew and became more popular and more mainstream due to all sorts of media. There isnt a lot of magazine specificly for his genre but i believe this is an advantage because less competiton would mean the magazine would sell in large numbers. Djs tend to keep to themselves and with more recogniton more people would want to know more about them and more Djs would come up for interviews. Also advertissemts during Dance festivals would be key in selling and advertissing the magazine. the Target audience is Teens and Young Adults, Female and Male. artist- josh standing.

product placement

The distribution and product placement of the magazines i analysised where key and specific to the audience that buys the magazines. For, the NME magazine, its design is very mainstream and in tone with the genre and readers. each magazine had advertissement for upcoming issues and inside looks on whats to come. the magazines all have specicfic target audiences, in this case it was adults and more for males. KERRANG sold magazines which included Rock and Metal music, indie and mainstream bands. NME included more known chart artist and bands such as Plan b and the arctic monkeys. this diffrent genres appeal to different auidences and this helps in the distribtion of the magazine. The logos are always a key thing in the advertissement, although the colour of the title "KERRANG" or "NME" varie, they always keep the same font so the audience knows the specific magazine. its important to keep the genre the same for a certain magazine and this is why KERRANG are alsways featuring rock bands and NME more indie and pop bands and artists.

Mrs D

Devin, you have missed your first deadline.

There is some more analysis here, but you still need to analyse the colour in terms of the genre and audience.

magazine analysis 3

The name of the magazine is KERRANG! and the colours used are grey, blue, yellow, white and black. The page is set out in a clustered way which represents the genre of music associated with the band. All the fonts are the same but the name of the band is written in a metallic traced way. Pull quotes include swearing and violent language. The main picture is of the artist holding a guitar at a mid shot high angle and he seems to be screaming and holding his hand out. The other articles are different compared to the the main article which lots of different colours. The blue of the main article stands out on the contents page making it more appealing, rather than the grays and yellows

The contents page has a column down the right side with the colours, grey blue and yellow. like the cover photo. The picture isn't that of the cover, it is a different band and there is two other pictures which has the page number next to them. This pictures are included on the cover page but are smaller but are main stories and this is why they have there own separate spacing and arent on the column which has the rest of the articles numbered. at the bottom there is a article from the editor explaining whats in this issue and a subscription offer advertised in bold red fonts.

The double page spread has a flag set up with a grey top white middle and red bottom, which large red text in the middle saying "The Steel". there is a mid shot of the lead singer holding a guitar looking into the camera in a aggressive manor. The pull quotes consist of threatening language and words as the artist decribes that he is back to "re invent music!" the article goes on but stops at a "cliffhanger" and intrigues you to turn the page and read on. The font is still bold and red even in the articles to show how different the artist/band member is.

magazine analysis 2

The name of the magazine is KERRANG! The colours used on the cover page are Red, Black, Yellow and White. A column down the left side of the cover shows different bands and articles included in the magazine and the colour of the colour is a stronger red with yellow and black font, which is different to the colour background of the main article. The centre of the cover page has a mid shot of th leader singer of the band "30 seconds to mars", with a shot of him looking down through the lens at eyeline level. The background is white which helps to make the image stand out and appeal to the audience. The font and colouring makes the cover seem modern and basic but still appeals because it is different. Words are coloured differently, for example the "30" and "to" are in bold black while the rest is in white and the subtitles surrounding the band name are white with a red box as a back-fill but the box's are transparent so the artists image is still visable. At the bottom of the cover there is a seperate box which is in black and has "slam dunk 2012 10 bands to be announced inside!"which is in a yellow and white helping it stand out and appeal to the reader.

The contents page consists of a column on the right side with has a white back set and every subtitle has a black box with yellow text which also stands out. The other colours are red and black which go with the theme of the magazine (rock and heavy metal). The left side of the page shows a picture of a band and has a preview article giving you a taste on what is to come. Also there is a competition which enables you to win a top from the band. There is a article at the bottom from the editor of the magazine, updating the readers. overall the text and font match well with those of the cover page.

The double page spread is white and only has red and black fonts which represent the band as their dress sense and colours are red and black. On the left there is a mid-close up of the leader singer and this picture is bigger than the other rectangular pictures on the left page which are set out around the article with pull quotes surrounding there images. The article is about the first 10 years of their career and the title " 10 years of life on mars" is written in the same font as their bands name, which really shows that the double page spread is theirs and made for them.

Mrs D

There are some good ideas here and this is a good start. You start to use the terminology and look at colour well. To improve, you need to be more specific and detailed. You need to link to audeince and genre to help. Have a look at some other egs on the blog to help.

magazine Analysis

The front cover of the NME has a mid shot of 4 members of the Arctic monkeys. Bold fonts are used with colours such as black, a vibrant orange and white. The title of the magazine NME is in a completely different colour, outlined in white with a red fill makes in stand out on the cover to ensure eye catching attention. The black background helps to bring more attention to the band members, also the black used can provide a feel of their emotions and the quote pull says “ We can’t worry about what other people think” setting a serious mood and the black fonts and backgrounds go well with this. At the bottom of the cover we have three columns in a bold white font showing what else is in the magazine. Also the very top of the cover page in orange bold font, it says “15 new bands to get excited about” which also appeals to the audience and would help sell the magazine by saying what else is in the magazine but not fully giving it away. Vibrant orange and white shapes on the cover with imformation about exclusive articles. The font used is bold and smaller than the other fonts which enstices the reader to look closer at the magazine. The title of the cover, "Arctic Monkeys" is in a bold vibrant orange and is in the middle of two white smaller sized pull qoutes, which helps to make the main title stand out but also helps to get the auidence to read around the title.

The contents page has one column down the left side with a basic white background and a red font with different page titles listing in alphabetical order, the title above the page listings is "whats inside" to provide a idea of where everything is and laid out. 3/4 of the page is a picture of the artist jack white, again with basic fonts and colours, such as black, white and red. towards the bottom of the page there is advertissements for upcomming articles. The box inwhich they are set in is black gold and white, which stands out from the other colours on the page. There is also a small article on the contents page, talking about a gig performed by jack white, again set out in the same colours as the other things on the contents page (white, red and black). In the article diferent names are highlighted in bold and these other artists are mentioned in other pages in the article to show other collaborating artists.

The double page spread is laid out in a simple, yet appealing way. On the first page we see a close up on the lead singer from "The arctic Monkeys". The shot is taken from a high angle so the reader is looking down at him giving the impression that instead of feeling happy and proud about his past year, there is something bothering of effecting the band and this is supported in the Article. The colours used are vinatge brown and black. This is very different colour and still to how the article is advertissed on the cover, its a more laid back and serious feel, rather than the bright orange and bold black from the cover. The title is "A Yorkshireman in New York" which is written in capital letters, with New York highlighted in bold black. Also the starting word of the article as a over sized "i" and is in a black bold mentalic font which blends in with the article. The rustic and vintage colours go well with the mood of the article. Reading through the article, you can see the pull qoutes from the front cover.
